Britain Plans Major AI Data Centre Development

UK Drax Plant to Host 27 Billion AI Project

Britain’s Drax power station in North Yorkshire is expected to become the location of one of the country’s largest data centres following a £20 billion ($27 billion) investment agreement focused on artificial intelligence infrastructure.

According to The Guardian, Drax has partnered with infrastructure investment firm Brookfield and AI infrastructure company Radiant to develop a major data centre at the site. The proposed facility is expected to eventually achieve a computing capacity exceeding one gigawatt.

The project’s initial phase is scheduled to begin operations in the first quarter of 2028, with the capacity to provide up to 100 megawatts of computing power.

Under the proposed arrangement, Drax will make land available and provide access to the national electricity network through its existing grid connections. The company also intends to supply electricity directly to the facility from the early 2030s, subject to regulatory approval.

Drax estimates that the development could generate more than $27 billion in investment, potentially transforming the future of the site as the British government considers reducing its role in electricity generation.

Drax Chief Executive Will Gardiner said the initiative would help establish a sustainable long-term future for the facility while safeguarding hundreds of existing jobs.

He also highlighted the project’s potential contribution to industrial development in northern England and the expansion of Britain’s domestic artificial intelligence capabilities.

Environmental Concerns Remain

Despite the proposed investment, environmental concerns surrounding Drax’s operations continue to attract attention.

The power station produces almost 5% of Britain’s electricity by burning wood-based biomass pellets. Environmental analysts regard the facility as the country’s largest individual source of carbon dioxide emissions.

However, these emissions are excluded from the UK government’s official carbon accounts because Drax argues that the carbon released through burning biomass is balanced by the growth of replacement trees used for fuel production.

The company’s environmental claims have faced increasing scrutiny, prompting the government to indicate that Drax will have a considerably reduced role in the country’s future energy generation strategy.
