Canada and UK Leaders Strengthen Trade and Defense Ties
HAMILTON, Canada – 17 February 2026
Mark Carney and Keir Starmer held talks on Monday to expand economic and security cooperation between Canada and the United Kingdom.
According to an official statement from Carney’s office, the two leaders focused on strengthening trade ties and deepening collaboration in key sectors.
Condolences After School Shooting
At the start of the call, Carney thanked Starmer for offering condolences following last week’s deadly school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. The leaders acknowledged the tragedy and expressed solidarity during the difficult time.
Expanding Economic Cooperation
During the discussion, both prime ministers highlighted growing economic and security partnerships. In particular, they reviewed progress under the Canada-UK Economic and Trade Working Group.
They emphasized cooperation in digital trade, critical minerals, and sovereign artificial intelligence infrastructure. Moreover, they explored ways to expand commercial opportunities and improve supply chain resilience.
The leaders also addressed ongoing talks between the European Union and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership bloc, noting the importance of closer coordination.
Defense and Security Financing
Carney underlined the importance of establishing the Defense, Security and Resilience Bank. He said the proposed DSR Bank could attract private investment to support defense and security companies across supply chains. As a result, the initiative could create major opportunities for workers and businesses in both countries.
Both leaders agreed to direct their teams to advance the project and align Canadian and British efforts.
Broader Diplomatic Context
In addition, Carney and Starmer pledged to remain in close contact as Canada works to strengthen global partnerships.
Relations between Canada and the United States have faced strain since Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian goods. Tensions increased further after the United States paused trade negotiations in response to an anti-tariff advertisement aired in the US.
