China Calls on Canada to Reduce US Influence During Carney Visit
Beijing Sees Opening as Canadian Leader Arrives
China has urged Canada to pursue a more independent foreign policy as Prime Minister Mark Carney arrives in Beijing on Wednesday. Chinese officials and state media view the visit as a chance to slightly weaken Canada’s long-standing alignment with the United States.
State-run outlets have encouraged Ottawa to adopt what China describes as “strategic autonomy,” meaning a foreign policy less shaped by Washington’s priorities.
Longstanding Alliance Under Pressure
Canada has remained one of the United States’ closest allies for decades, linked by geography, trade, and security ties. However, Beijing believes recent U.S. actions could strain that relationship.
In particular, China points to President Donald Trump’s aggressive economic policies and military actions against other countries. Chinese officials hope these moves may push some U.S. allies to reconsider their dependence on Washington.
China Adjusts Its Strategy
Previously, Beijing reacted strongly to efforts by former U.S. President Joe Biden to strengthen cooperation among allies in Europe, Australia, India, and Canada to counter China’s influence. Now, Chinese leaders see a possible opening to loosen those partnerships, even as they remain cautious about how far Canada may go.
Carney Focuses on Trade Diversification
For his part, Prime Minister Carney has framed the China visit as part of a broader effort to expand Canada’s global trade relationships. He has said the goal is to reduce Canada’s heavy economic reliance on the U.S. market.
Tensions between Ottawa and Washington have increased after Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian exports. The U.S. president has also made controversial remarks suggesting Canada could one day become America’s 51st state.
As talks continue in Beijing, analysts say the visit may test how Canada balances its traditional alliance with the United States while exploring deeper engagement with China.
