The United States has suspended consular services at its embassy and consulates across Brazil starting Friday October 2 citing security concerns. The US Mission Brazil announced that the pause would begin that day without stating when services would restart. American citizens needing urgent help were advised not to visit any US diplomatic facilities and instead to contact the relevant duty officer.
Australia also closed its embassy in Brasilia on Friday for the same reason. Ambassador Sophie Davies directed anyone requiring consular support to reach the Consular Emergency Centre in Canberra.
These steps come ahead of Brazil’s general elections on Sunday when voters will choose a president members of parliament governors of the 26 states and other officials.
