Zelensky to Hold High-Level Talks at Downing Street on Ukraine Peace Plan
London: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet top European leaders in London on Monday to discuss Ukraine’s response to ongoing US-led peace negotiations. The meeting comes amid pressure on Kyiv to consider concessions in discussions with Russia.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will host the talks at 10 Downing Street, joined by the leaders of France and Germany. Officials aim to ensure any potential agreement discourages future Russian aggression.
The London meeting follows three days of negotiations in Florida, where Zelensky’s chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, sought adjustments to a White House plan that many critics say aligns with key Kremlin demands.
The United States and Ukraine acknowledged some progress in the talks. However, former US President Donald Trump expressed frustration on Sunday, claiming Zelensky “hasn’t read” the draft proposal. Trump told reporters: “I’m a little disappointed that President Zelensky hasn’t yet read the proposal. His team likes it… Russia would prefer the whole country, but I think Russia is okay with it. I’m not sure Zelensky is.”
Trump appeared to reference the latest draft, revised in Miami following negotiations involving Umerov and Trump’s advisers, including special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner.
In response, Zelensky confirmed that Umerov would brief him on the discussions either in London or Brussels. He emphasized that “some issues can only be discussed in person,” noting that meetings with Witkoff and Kushner were “constructive, though not easy.”
