Indonesia Becomes Full BRICS Member

Indonesia has officially joined the BRICS group, solidifying its place among the world’s major emerging economies, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. This move, announced by Brazil’s government on Monday, signals a deeper commitment to cooperation among developing nations.

The Indonesian foreign ministry hailed the decision, emphasizing that BRICS membership is a strategic step towards bolstering partnerships and fostering greater collaboration with fellow developing countries. With its massive population and growing influence, Indonesia sees this membership as a way to strengthen the voice of the Global South in global affairs.

Indonesia had long sought to be part of the influential bloc, aiming to contribute to its objectives of promoting economic development and shared prosperity. As the fourth most populous nation in the world, Indonesia’s inclusion brings a fresh dynamic to BRICS, which also counts Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates among its members.

Brazil, which will assume the BRICS presidency in 2025, confirmed that Indonesia’s membership was approved by consensus, following the expansion endorsement at the 2023 BRICS summit in Johannesburg. This marks a significant shift towards greater inclusivity, as the BRICS group continues to extend its reach and impact, shaping the future of global economic cooperation. Indonesia’s entrance into BRICS is a powerful reminder of the growing collective strength of emerging nations on the world stage.
