Iran Condemns EU Decision to Label IRGC as Terrorist Group

Tehran — January 30, 2026

Iran has strongly rejected the European Union’s decision to designate its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a “terrorist organisation,” calling the move “illogical, irresponsible, and politically motivated.”

EU Labels IRGC Terrorist

On Thursday, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced that the bloc’s foreign ministers had taken a “decisive step” in classifying the IRGC as a terrorist group. She stressed that government repression must not go unanswered. “Any regime that kills thousands of its own people is working toward its own demise,” Kallas wrote on social media.

Iran Denounces the Decision

The Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned the EU’s action as “illegal, political, and contrary to international law,” adding that it violated Iran’s internal affairs. Tehran emphasized that it “reserves the right to take appropriate measures under international law to defend its sovereignty, national security, and the interests of the Iranian nation.”

The ministry also warned that the European Union and its member states would be held responsible for any consequences arising from the decision.
