Iraqi Turkmen Front Boycotts Kirkuk Council Over Disputed Elections

The Iraqi Turkmen Front announced Tuesday that its members in Iraq’s Kirkuk province will continue to boycott provincial council sessions, citing their protest over the recent governorate elections. The elections, held at the initiative of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), were labeled illegal by the Turkmen Front, which has appealed to the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court for their annulment.

Despite the boycott, the Turkmen members stated they would continue to fulfill their regular duties to ensure essential services reach the people of Kirkuk. They remain firm in their stance against the council’s actions, which they claim have marginalized their participation.

The controversial election saw the PUK-backed Rebwar Taha elected as governor, while Arab member Muhammad Hafiz was chosen to lead the council. Turkmen members, alongside some Arab and Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) members, boycotted the vote held in Baghdad.

The Iraqi Turkmen Front has vowed to seek a court ruling to invalidate the election and refuses to recognize the legitimacy of the new leadership.–News Desk
