Italy is preparing new measures that would limit the number of foreign students in schools and prohibit the wearing of burqas and hijabs in educational institutions, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Sunday.
Speaking at Fenix, a national youth festival organized by the youth wing of her Brothers of Italy party, Meloni said Italian students should not feel like a minority in their own classrooms.
She argued that schools should maintain a strong connection with Italian society and said her government considered it unacceptable for Italian children to feel marginalized because of the composition of their classrooms.
Meloni also announced plans to prohibit the use of burqas and hijabs in schools. The proposed measure would introduce restrictions on religious clothing while students are attending educational institutions.
In addition, the government plans to require parents of foreign students who face difficulties integrating into the Italian education system to learn the Italian language.
Meloni said the proposed legislation is expected to be presented to Italy’s Council of Ministers in the near future for consideration.
