Kremlin: BRICS Currency “Not Possible” Yet

MOSCOW – Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated on Wednesday that creating a single currency within the BRICS bloc is currently “not possible.”

During a forum in Moscow, Peskov highlighted that the recent BRICS Leaders Summit in Kazan was highly productive, with significant outcomes from extensive negotiations. However, while financial and economic cooperation was discussed, the idea of establishing a single currency was not a major topic.

Peskov noted that all BRICS nations are aware of how the US dollar, as the world’s reserve currency, can be used as a political tool, and how the SWIFT payment system could be wielded to pressure countries. Despite this, he mentioned that not all nations are prepared to move forward with establishing an alternative payment system, though there is a growing focus on this area.
