Libya’s House of Representatives unanimously approved a maritime boundary agreement with Türkiye on Tuesday, reversing its previous rejection of the deal and its earlier decision to sever political relations with Ankara, according to a statement issued by the parliament.
In a statement released in Benghazi, the parliament confirmed that lawmakers endorsed a memorandum of understanding signed in 2019 between Türkiye and Libya’s former Government of National Accord. The agreement defines maritime jurisdiction areas in the Mediterranean Sea.
Parliament members also voted to repeal Resolution No. 1 of 2020, which had rejected the ratification of two memorandums of understanding between Libya and Türkiye.
Additionally, lawmakers unanimously overturned Resolution No. 6 of 2020, which called for cutting political ties with Ankara, the statement said.
Türkiye and Libya signed the maritime agreement in November 2019 to establish the boundaries of their respective maritime zones in the Mediterranean.
The latest parliamentary decision represents a significant reversal of Libya’s previous position on the agreements and its earlier stance toward political relations with Türkiye.
