Pakistan, Denmark Launch $2B Maritime Partnership to Modernize Ports

Deal to Boost Trade, Embrace Green Technologies, and Strengthen Workforce Development

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan and Denmark have reaffirmed a $2 billion partnership aimed at transforming Pakistan’s maritime sector through port modernization, green shipping technologies, and enhanced trade competitiveness.

The announcement followed a high-level meeting in Islamabad between Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, and Danish Ambassador Jakob Linulf. Both sides agreed to fast-track the execution of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed last year, with Danish shipping leader AP Moller–Maersk spearheading the investment initiative.

Key discussions revolved around upgrading logistics and port infrastructure, introducing renewable energy solutions such as solar and wind-powered operations, and promoting energy-efficient maritime practices. The partnership also includes workforce training programs to equip maritime professionals with skills for managing eco-friendly vessels and sustainable port systems.

Minister Chaudhry emphasized the importance of adopting green technologies to reduce emissions, cut operational costs, and elevate Pakistan’s global trade image. “These reforms will not only support environmental goals but also enhance Pakistan’s export capabilities,” he stated.

The official statement confirmed that Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc is expected to visit Pakistan this week to meet the prime minister and other senior officials, signaling the beginning of a transformative era in Pakistan’s maritime industry.
