PTA Extends VPN Registration Deadline

The Chairman of Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA), Major General (retired) Hafeezul Rehman, confirmed on Saturday that the government has approved an extension to the VPN registration deadline, although no new date has been provided. VPNs, which are used to bypass internet restrictions, have become increasingly popular in Pakistan, especially for accessing banned sites like X. The PTA had previously announced plans to restrict unregistered VPNs after a disruption rendered them non-functional. While the original deadline of November 30 was set to block unregistered VPNs, the extension allows more time for compliance and public awareness campaigns on VPN registration. The new deadline will be determined by the interior ministry.
