Russia issued a warning on Saturday regarding the risk of an “explosive escalation” in tensions between Iran and Israel, following Israeli airstrikes on military sites within Iran.
Israel cautioned that Tehran would face severe consequences if it retaliated against these strikes. Both the United States and Britain urged Iran to refrain from further escalating the situation.
Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, expressed concern about the ongoing tensions in the region. “We call on all parties to exercise restraint, halt the violence, and prevent the situation from spiraling into a catastrophic scenario,” she stated.
Zakharova emphasized the need to avoid provoking Iran into retaliatory measures and to break the cycle of escalating conflict.
During a recent BRICS summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin remarked that the rising tensions between Israel and Iran could lead to a full-scale war in the Middle East. He noted, “The level of confrontation between Israel and Iran has sharply increased. This resembles a chain reaction, placing the entire Middle East on the brink of war.”
Moscow maintains strong ties with Iran and is concerned about the potential for a broader conflict in the region, where it has both security and economic interests.
