Snow and Ice Trigger Pileup on Northern California Highway
Snowy and icy conditions caused multiple vehicle spinouts and collisions on a highway in northeastern California during Christmas and Christmas Eve, leading to traffic shutdowns and long delays.
The California Highway Patrol shared video footage on social media showing vehicles stuck in heavy traffic near Castle Peak in the Sierra Nevada Mountains on Christmas night.
Traffic Halted Near Donner Summit
According to the highway patrol, eastbound traffic came to a standstill at Castle Peak due to a pileup involving more than 10 vehicles over Donner Summit. Authorities issued the update shortly before 8:00 p.m. on Christmas Day.
Officials warned that clearing the scene would take time as crews worked to remove damaged vehicles and restore traffic flow.
Injuries Remain Unclear
USA TODAY has contacted the California Highway Patrol to determine whether anyone was injured in the crashes. However, officials have not yet released further details.
