Javier Bardem Calls for Peace and Palestinian Freedom at Oscars
Actor Uses Platform to Promote Peace
ISTANBUL — Spanish actor Javier Bardem called for peace and Palestinian freedom while presenting an award at the Oscars ceremony on Sunday in Los Angeles, California.
While presenting the Oscar for Best International Film, Bardem opened his remarks with the phrases “No to war” and “Free Palestine.” He also wore a pin displaying the Spanish phrase “No a la guerra”, which translates to “No to war,” alongside another pin supporting Palestine.
Highlighting the Human Cost of Conflict
Bardem’s statement comes amid ongoing tensions in Gaza. Since Israel’s military campaign in October 2023, the conflict has reportedly killed more than 72,000 Palestinians, wounded 172,000, and destroyed 90% of the enclave’s civilian infrastructure.
The actor used his high-profile platform to draw attention to the humanitarian crisis and advocate for an end to hostilities, urging global awareness and support for Palestinian freedom.
Hollywood Platform for Advocacy
Bardem’s appearance at the Oscars demonstrates how international figures can leverage major events to highlight political and humanitarian issues. By speaking against war and showing solidarity with affected communities, he emphasized the importance of promoting peace in conflict zones.
