The Sudanese army said Thursday that its forces had captured 11 areas in North Kordofan state following intense clashes with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The army said its troops took control of Kajmar, Sharshar, Al-Baniya Al-Kurayniya, Al-Qulaiat, Awlad Hazma, Maquldat, Rishan, Al-Qaa, Al-Laqad Forest, Al-Kukaiti and areas around Al-Mazrub.
According to the military, the advances followed fierce fighting that caused heavy losses among RSF fighters. Army units also pursued remaining RSF members toward the outskirts of Darfur.
The army reported carrying out extensive clearing operations in areas west of El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan.
It said military operations would continue until government control is restored, civilians are protected and areas held by the RSF and its supporters are cleared.
The RSF had not issued a response to the army’s claims as of 1730 GMT on Thursday.
Military sources also reported that army forces had made advances on several fronts in both North and South Kordofan. On September 6, the army announced that it had captured Hamrat al-Wiz in the Jabra al-Sheikh area.
Since late July, the army has gained control of significant parts of North Kordofan after recapturing Bara, Jabra al-Sheikh and Umm Siyala.
The three Kordofan states — North, West and South — have experienced fighting between the army and RSF since October 25 last year.
Sudan has been in conflict between the military and RSF since April 2023. UN and international estimates say the war has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced around 13 million.
