Dog Discovers Transatlantic Message in a Bottle on Scottish Beach
Unusual Find on the Coast
A dog has discovered a message in a bottle that travelled thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean before reaching the shores of Aberdeenshire.
The bottle washed up at St Cyrus Beach, where it was found during a routine walk by photographer Mike Scott and his dog, Maggie.
Discovery During Daily Walk
Scott, who lives in Johnshaven, regularly walks his dogs along the beach. On the day of the discovery, strong winds and rough weather had affected the coastline.
As he walked, Maggie became interested in a dark glass bottle that had just washed ashore. Curious, Scott picked it up and noticed that something was inside.
Message from Canada
Inside the bottle, Scott found a sealed bag containing a handwritten note in French. After translating it at home, he learned that the message came from Canada.
The note, dated August 2024 and signed “Annie Chiasson,” explained that the bottle had been dropped into the sea from a ferry travelling between Prince Edward Island and Îles-de-la-Madeleine.
Remarkable Ocean Journey
The bottle appears to have travelled approximately 2,700 miles (4,300 km) across the North Atlantic Ocean. According to Scott, it likely survived two winters at sea before reaching Scotland.
He expressed surprise at its condition, noting that the glass remained intact despite the long and unpredictable journey.
Attempt to Contact Sender
The message included a request for the finder to respond. Scott and his wife searched for the sender online and contacted her through social media. However, they have not yet received a reply.
Meanwhile, media efforts to reach the sender have also been unsuccessful.
A Rare and Fascinating Discovery
Although Scott had previously found a message in a bottle, this discovery stood out due to its international origin. He described the experience as unusual and fascinating.
He added that the find highlights how objects can travel vast distances across oceans, often in unexpected ways.
