Trump Administration Plans Major White House Overhaul
The Trump administration is planning at least $900 million in construction and modernization projects across the White House complex, with much of the funding reportedly coming from federal agencies and private donors rather than direct congressional appropriations.
According to media reports, the administration has transferred hundreds of millions of dollars into the Executive Residence’s White House Repair and Restoration account to finance projects described as modernization efforts. Planned developments reportedly include an East Wing ballroom, improvements to Lafayette Square, a new helipad, a visitor screening facility and other upgrades, bringing the estimated cost to approximately $927 million.
The spending plans have emerged amid a legal dispute over the proposed East Wing ballroom. A federal appeals court recently ruled that congressional authorization is required for the project. The court stated that Congress has exclusive authority over the construction and demolition of White House structures. President Donald Trump has indicated that he intends to appeal the ruling.
The White House has not provided a comprehensive breakdown of the project’s total cost or disclosed the sources of most of the funding. White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said the projects are being undertaken in a manner consistent with congressional intent, describing the renovations as necessary improvements to the historic building.
Budget records cited in the reports indicate that approximately $875 million has been directed into the Executive Residence maintenance account since Trump returned to office, compared with annual appropriations of around $2.5 million in recent years.
The administration has also reportedly routed contracts through the Executive Residence, an office that is subject to fewer public disclosure requirements than many federal agencies. The scale of the proposed expenditure, combined with the ongoing legal challenge, is therefore likely to intensify scrutiny over congressional oversight, government spending and the preservation of the White House.
