WASHINGTON, D.C. – Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III emphasized the United States’ steadfast commitment to supporting Ukraine during his meeting with Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov at the Pentagon today. The discussions come in the wake of Russia’s recent attacks on Ukraine’s critical civilian infrastructure, which Austin strongly condemned.
Addressing the severity of the situation, Austin stated, “It is never acceptable to target civilians, and Ukraine’s resilience will help it prevail over Putin’s aggression and atrocities.” He lauded the determination of Ukrainian forces, noting, “They continue to fend off Kremlin’s assault and inflict major losses on Russian invaders. Make no mistake, the United States will not waiver in our support for a free and sovereign Ukraine.”
The meeting between Austin and Umerov took place ahead of the upcoming Ukraine Defense Contact Group gathering scheduled for next week at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. This 24th iteration of the U.S.-led coalition will bring together nearly 50 allies and partners dedicated to Ukraine’s defense. Austin highlighted that the coalition will focus on addressing Ukraine’s urgent battlefield needs, particularly enhancing air-defense capabilities to counter Russian drone and missile attacks.
This strategic support aligns with the United States’ ongoing efforts to ensure Ukraine possesses the necessary tools to defend its territory and deter long-term Russian aggression. Just last week, the Defense Department unveiled a new security assistance package for Ukraine valued at up to $125 million. This latest aid package includes essential weapons and ammunition tailored to Ukraine’s most pressing defense requirements, particularly in air defense.
The announcement marks the 64th delivery of U.S. equipment from Department of Defense inventories to Ukraine since August 2021, underscoring the enduring nature of U.S. support. Austin reiterated the importance of international collaboration, stating that the collective efforts of allies and partners are crucial in bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov expressed his gratitude for the continued support, stating, “The leadership of the United States has set a powerful example to encourage other partners to stand by Ukraine at this critical time.” He indicated that today’s meeting would delve into detailed discussions about the current battlefield situation and Ukraine’s strategic vision, objectives, and future plans.
