UN Condemns Israeli Settlers’ Attack on West Bank Mosque

Guterres Denounces Violence

HAMILTON, Canada — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned an attack by illegal Israeli settlers on a mosque in the occupied West Bank on Thursday.

“The Secretary-General strongly condemns the reported attack by Israeli settlers on a mosque in Deir Istiya,” said UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric. He added that “such acts of violence and desecration of religious sites are unacceptable.”

Guterres emphasized that religious sites must always be respected and protected. Moreover, he condemned all attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians and their property in the occupied territory.

Escalating Tensions in the West Bank

Dujarric noted that these attacks are part of a growing pattern of extremist violence, which increases tensions and must stop immediately. He also urged Israel, as the occupying power, to protect Palestinian civilians and hold those responsible accountable.

Since the Gaza war in October 2023, attacks by the Israeli army and illegal settlers have surged. Consequently, over 1,070 Palestinians have died and more than 10,300 have been injured, according to Palestinian sources.

International Legal Perspective

In addition, the International Court of Justice issued a landmark opinion in July declaring Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal. The court called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
