US Blizzard Triggers Widespread Disruptions

A massive winter storm battered the United States on Sunday, triggering blizzards, ice, and heavy snowfall across the Midwest, with the worst yet to come. The storm stretched from Kansas to New Jersey, putting millions at risk and snarling travel plans. Blizzard warnings were issued for Kansas and Missouri, while winter storm advisories extended all the way to Washington, D.C.

The storm, expected to dump up to 15 inches of snow in some areas, brought dangerous conditions that severely impacted visibility and made roads impassable. Kansas City’s airport temporarily shut down as snow and ice piled up, and the cold front was forecast to push temperatures well below freezing, with some areas facing sub-zero conditions. In addition to snow, freezing rain and sleet are expected to coat roads from Kansas to Virginia, which could lead to hazardous driving and widespread power outages.

Nearly 70 million people were under weather warnings as the storm swept across the country, with authorities urging residents to stay indoors. Governors in Kentucky, Virginia, and Missouri declared states of emergency, warning of potentially deadly conditions. As the storm moves east, the East Coast could face significant snow accumulations and hazardous travel, with communities already reeling from recent hurricanes now bracing for more damage.

The storm’s harsh combination of snow, ice, and freezing temperatures left many preparing for more disruptions, from fallen trees to power outages, as conditions are predicted to worsen over the coming days.
