USS Somerset Sailors Join NASA for Artemis II Recovery Drill

Training Prepares Teams for Crewed Lunar Mission Operations

Navy, NASA Conduct Crew Module Recovery Exercise

Pacific Ocean — Sailors aboard the USS Somerset teamed up with NASA engineers on March 26, 2025, for an underway recovery test, releasing a crew module test article into the ocean. The drill is part of preparations for NASA’s Artemis II mission, which will send four astronauts on a journey around the moon and beyond aboard the Orion spacecraft.

The Defense Department and NASA will conduct multiple recovery tests to refine procedures, evaluate equipment, and ensure a smooth recovery process for future crewed lunar missions.
