The U.S. National Security Council spokesperson Sean Savett urged Iran to halt its assaults on Israel to end the ongoing cycle of violence without further escalation. He made the remarks to reporters following Israeli airstrikes on Iranian military bases, missile sites, and other facilities across multiple regions on Saturday.
Savett emphasized that the Israeli military’s actions were a measure of self-defense, carefully targeting military installations while avoiding populated areas, in contrast to Iran’s strikes that affected Israel’s largest city. He clarified that the United States did not take part in the operation, stating that the goal is to enhance diplomatic efforts and reduce tensions in the Middle East.
A senior administration official noted that President Joe Biden and his national security team had been collaborating with Israeli leaders in recent weeks, advocating for a response that was both targeted and proportional, with minimal risk to civilians.
The official indicated that this approach appeared to have been successfully implemented during the recent strikes. Additionally, President Biden had advised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to devise a response that would deter future assaults on Israel while minimizing the risk of escalating the conflict.
