Nearly 1,800 families have been forced to leave their homes in southwestern Yemen within just two days as fighting intensifies in Taiz province, according to the United Nations.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said around 1,790 households had been displaced since September 3, with people continuing to flee areas affected by the conflict in Maqbanah and Jabal Habashi districts.
Most displaced families have moved to other locations within the same districts, while others have travelled to Al-Ma’afer, Ash Shamayatayn, Mawza and Dhubab in western Taiz.
The UN also reported that some displacement centres had been abandoned, resulting in another wave of people being forced to relocate. Continued shelling is making it difficult for families to reach safer locations, while some people remain trapped in areas where fighting is taking place.
Communication problems are also making it harder for aid organizations to collect information, verify conditions and coordinate emergency assistance. At the same time, humanitarian supplies are running dangerously low.
The latest displacement comes amid renewed fighting on several fronts in Yemen. Increased clashes and retaliatory attacks since July have ended a period of relative calm that followed a UN-backed ceasefire in April 2022.
The Houthis have controlled Sanaa and several other cities since 2014, while Yemen’s internationally recognized government and its allies control large parts of the southern, eastern and western regions.
