Yemeni government forces said Thursday that 1,370 Houthi fighters had been “neutralized” in 1,729 strikes carried out during the ongoing “Dawn of Yemen” military operation.
According to an official statement, the strikes focused on Houthi observation posts, command and control centers, weapons storage facilities, supply locations, reinforcements and military positions across several battlefronts.
The forces said they used advanced weaponry during the offensive, which reportedly destroyed or damaged around 300 military vehicles, pieces of equipment and other military assets. However, the reported figures could not be independently confirmed.
The operation was announced Monday by Rashad al-Alimi, chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council. He said the campaign seeks to restore government institutions, recapture the capital Sanaa and end Houthi control.
Government forces have also reported territorial gains in southwestern Yemen, particularly in areas surrounding the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government said that 100 fighter jets participated in attacks against Houthi positions.
The latest offensive follows renewed clashes after Houthi forces made advances in September, including taking control of the strategic port city of Mokha and Mayyun Island, which overlooks the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Yemen’s conflict began in 2014, when the Houthis captured Sanaa. In response, a Saudi-led coalition intervened militarily in March 2015 to support the internationally recognized government.
