At least 13 people tragically lost their lives when an Indian Navy boat, undergoing engine trials, collided with a crowded passenger ferry off the coast of Mumbai on Wednesday. The ferry capsized, throwing over 100 passengers into the water. Despite the harrowing incident, 99 people were rescued, with search efforts still underway.
The collision occurred when a naval craft, reportedly malfunctioning, veered off course and slammed into the ferry, causing it to capsize quickly. Passengers recalled the terrifying moment when the boat overturned, and life jackets were hurriedly distributed.
Among the deceased were one naval personnel and two equipment manufacturers participating in the trial. Two others suffered serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital.
Rescue teams, including helicopters and naval boats, launched immediate operations to search the waters, and the Indian government expressed deep condolences. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced compensation for the victims’ families, as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also pledged financial support to the bereaved families.
The ferry, Neelkamal, was on its way to the Elephanta caves, a UNESCO heritage site, when the disaster struck. The tragic event has deeply shaken the city and its residents, prompting national mourning.
