Norwegian Police Investigate US Embassy Blast as Possible Terrorism
ISTANBUL — Norwegian authorities are investigating an explosion at the US Embassy in Oslo that occurred early Sunday. Police said one possible explanation is that the blast may be linked to terrorism, potentially connected to the current global security situation.
At a press briefing, Frode Larsen, head of the Joint Investigation and Intelligence Unit, said authorities are examining several possible causes but believe the incident targeted the embassy. Initial findings indicate that some form of explosive device likely caused the blast.
“One of the hypotheses is terrorism, but we remain open to other explanations,” Larsen said. “It is natural to consider the ongoing security situation, including escalation in the Middle East amid US-Israeli attacks on Iran.”
Response and Damage Assessment
Police deployed a large number of officers around the US Embassy in the Huseby district of western Oslo after reports of a loud explosion at approximately 1 a.m. local time (0000 GMT).
Authorities confirmed the blast occurred near the consular entrance. Damage was limited, and no injuries were reported. Incident commander Michael Dellemyr said the explosion caused only minor damage, and investigators are not yet disclosing specific details.
Investigation Underway
Officials said they are searching for one or more suspects, while investigators conduct crime-scene examinations and interview witnesses. Police confirmed that searches around the embassy found no additional explosive threats.
Despite the blast, the national threat assessment remains unchanged, according to authorities.
