The United States remains committed to supporting Ukraine as its military continues operations within Russian territory, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh confirmed today. During a briefing at the Pentagon, Singh emphasized the ongoing collaboration between U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III and Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, stating that both leaders are in close communication regarding Ukraine’s pressing military needs.
“The secretary reiterated U.S. support for Ukraine and that the two will continue to remain in close contact,” Singh told the media. This support is particularly vital as Ukrainian forces advance into Russia’s Kursk region, marking a significant escalation in the conflict.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy provided further details on the objectives of the counteroffensive in Kursk during his address on Saturday. He reported that Ukrainian forces are successfully inflicting heavy losses on Russian troops and disrupting their logistical operations. “We see that the occupier is suffering losses, and this is helpful — very helpful — for our defense,” Zelenskyy said. The Ukrainian military’s strategy in Kursk aims to dismantle Russian supply chains and weaken their reserves, which Zelenskyy described as essential to Ukraine’s broader defense efforts.
Zelenskyy also highlighted the importance of creating a buffer zone within Russian territory to prevent further attacks on Ukraine. “We are eliminating the Russian military presence in the area of our operations there and replenishing ‘the exchange fund’ for our state,” he noted. This “exchange fund” refers to the replenishment of Ukrainian units with necessary personnel, ammunition, and supplies.
Singh reiterated that U.S. support for Ukraine would persist, primarily through ongoing security assistance. “Presidential drawdown packages are going to continue,” she confirmed. However, Singh declined to provide specific details on the movement of Russian forces within Ukraine, acknowledging only that there have been shifts but without disclosing their precise locations.
Zelenskyy underscored that the Ukrainian forces’ actions in Kursk are part of a broader strategy to degrade Russia’s military capabilities and to push towards a just conclusion to the war. “This includes creating a buffer zone on the aggressor’s territory: our operation in the Kursk region,” he stated, emphasizing the necessity of these operations in ensuring Ukraine’s defense and in bringing the conflict to a close.
