JERUSALEM, Israel — On Sunday, August 25, 2024, the Israeli government approved a significant extension of assistance for residents of northern and southern communities affected by ongoing conflicts, as well as for hostages, the missing, and their families. The proposal, brought forward by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, and Tourism Minister Haim Katz, extends the period of support until December 31, 2024.
The decision is part of the government’s continued efforts to provide necessary support and adjustment measures for those displaced by the Swords of Iron War and other security incidents. The extended assistance package includes independent housing grants, financial aid for unemployed displaced residents, and incentives to encourage employment among affected communities.
The estimated budget for this extension is approximately NIS 3.3 billion. According to the government decision, Finance Minister Smotrich will confirm the allocation of these funds as part of the amended Budgetary Frameworks Law, which will be submitted for approval by the Knesset.
This extension underscores the government’s commitment to supporting communities facing prolonged displacement and those who have suffered the trauma of kidnapping or loss of loved ones.
