Around 85 American citizens are still unaccounted for in Nepal and China’s Tibet region after a massive glacial collapse caused devastating flash floods on Aug. 26, according to the US State Department.
State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said that nine Americans had been safely evacuated, while US authorities had not received information about any American deaths so far.
He said US embassies in Kathmandu and Beijing are working around the clock with local authorities to locate missing citizens and collect accurate information about their condition.
The United States has also announced more than $3.6 million in humanitarian assistance for communities affected by the disaster. The aid includes emergency food supplies that could support as many as 10,000 households.
The floods were triggered by the sudden collapse of a glacier, sending huge amounts of water and debris through Himalayan valleys. The powerful floods destroyed homes, villages and critical infrastructure.
The wider disaster has resulted in more than 800 deaths, while almost 3,300 people are still reported missing across the affected border areas.
