The United States and Ukraine are working to organize a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the high-level week of the UN General Assembly later this month, according to Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Tykhyi said officials from both countries were discussing the possibility of the meeting, its agenda and ways to ensure that the talks produce meaningful results.
He said Zelenskyy is scheduled to hold several bilateral discussions during the Ukrainian delegation’s visit to New York for the 81st UN General Assembly session.
Tykhyi added that Zelenskyy’s visit would include a significant US-related agenda, including possible meetings with members of Congress, American business representatives and the Ukrainian community in the United States.
The 81st UN General Assembly session opened in New York on Tuesday, while its high-level week is scheduled to begin on Friday and continue until Sept. 28.
Earlier this month, Tykhyi said Ukraine and the US had reached a preliminary understanding on holding an in-person meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy toward the end of September. He identified the UN General Assembly as one possible location for the talks.
Following his Sept. 8 meeting in Kyiv with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Zelenskyy said he expected to meet Trump later this month. He indicated that Ukraine’s requirements, including what he described as “ballistic packages,” would be among the issues he plans to discuss.
