Mauritania’s President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani has reappointed Mokhtar Ould Djay as prime minister and instructed him to form a new government.
The presidency announced the decision on Friday, shortly after Ould Djay submitted his government’s resignation.
The resignation followed the release of findings from an independent investigation into fires at two major electricity substations in the capital, Nouakchott.
According to the investigation report, the fires occurred on August 21 and 22 and were caused by electrical connectors that failed to meet the required technical standards. The components had reportedly been imported by a private company.
The report assigned responsibility for the incidents to the company involved and officials within the Energy Ministry. The fires triggered widespread electricity disruptions, leaving several areas of Nouakchott without power for days.
Despite the government’s resignation, the president decided to retain Ould Djay in the prime ministerial position and tasked him with establishing a new Cabinet.
Ould Djay has served as Mauritania’s prime minister since August 2024. Before his appointment, he held several senior government positions, including head of the presidential office and minister of economy and finance.
