The US Justice Department has reportedly issued subpoenas to relatives of Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar as part of a criminal investigation into her family’s immigration history, according to The New York Times.
Omar’s sister, Sahra Noor, and at least one other family member received subpoenas, the newspaper reported, citing sources familiar with the inquiry.
The development followed a search of Omar’s Washington, DC, residence by Department of Homeland Security agents. The officers reportedly removed several boxes of documents from the property.
Investigators are examining whether Omar’s late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, provided false information or withheld details on immigration documents before obtaining US citizenship.
Omar condemned the search, accusing the Trump administration of using federal law enforcement to target political opponents. In a post on X, she confirmed that she was safe and vowed not to be silenced.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump accused Omar of fraud in a post on Truth Social, demanding immediate answers. Vice President JD Vance stated that he had not been informed about the search in advance.
The investigation has intensified political tensions in Washington, with questions emerging over the inquiry’s purpose and the treatment of political opponents ahead of the midterm elections.
