The Saudi-led military coalition announced on Thursday that its air defense systems had successfully intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired by Yemen’s Houthi rebels toward the Medina region in western Saudi Arabia.
Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki confirmed the interception in a statement published on X, a US-based social media platform.
However, the coalition did not disclose the specific location the missile was targeting or provide information about any possible damage resulting from the incident.
Meanwhile, Yemen’s Houthi movement has not issued any response to the announcement.
The development comes as tensions between the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition continue to intensify. The coalition supports Yemen’s internationally recognised government in its ongoing conflict with the rebel group.
Saudi Arabia established the military alliance in March 2015 to support Yemen’s government after Houthi fighters captured the capital, Sanaa, and several other areas of the country in 2014.
