A ransomware group believed to operate from Russia has published screenshots on the dark web showing what appears to be information stolen from British Columbia’s Burnaby School District.
The cybercriminal group, known as Qilin, claims it is offering downloadable files allegedly obtained during a major data breach. School authorities previously confirmed that the incident involved the exposure of highly sensitive information, including medical records, detailed student learning assessments, and personal data belonging to both employees and students.
Qilin is widely recognised as a Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) operation. It provides cybercriminals with the software, tools and infrastructure required to carry out ransomware attacks. In return, the group receives a share of the money collected through extortion.
The screenshots reportedly display folders with sensitive labels, including ‘Payroll’ and ‘Harassment Investigations’, raising further concerns about the potential exposure of confidential employee and institutional records.
The latest development has intensified concerns about the scale of the cyberattack and the possible consequences for students, families and school employees. However, the authenticity and full extent of the information advertised by the group have yet to be independently established.
