Malaysia Views Türkiye as Key Strategic Partner, Says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Thursday that Malaysia considers Türkiye an important strategic partner, highlighting the long-standing relationship between the two countries.
Speaking at a roundtable meeting with Turkish business leaders in Istanbul, Ibrahim emphasized the strong level of trust between the leadership, governments, and people of both nations. He said such mutual confidence reflects deep understanding and cooperation.
Strong Historical Ties and Regional Role
The meeting, organized by the Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), brought together representatives from 46 Turkish companies.
Referring to historical links dating back to the Ottoman era, Ibrahim said the two countries share a positive past. He added that, given this background, Türkiye and Malaysia serve as important regional pillars.
Moreover, he said Türkiye’s growing role, partnership potential, and industrial capacity will further expand bilateral business, trade, and investment opportunities.
Defense Industry and Economic Strengths
Ibrahim also praised Türkiye’s strengths, particularly in the defense sector. He noted that Türkiye stands out globally for its defense industry, including advanced drone technology.
At the same time, he highlighted Malaysia’s economic stability and rising growth. He said the country continues to build momentum across key industries.
Focus on Technology and Future Cooperation
Therefore, Ibrahim called for stronger synergy between the two nations, with greater focus on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and modern banking systems.
He also pointed to Malaysia’s strengths in energy, semiconductors, and electrical and electronic industries, saying these sectors offer strong potential for cooperation.
According to official figures, trade between Malaysia and Türkiye reached nearly $5 billion from January to November 2025.
