AUKUS Defense Ministers Meet in Washington to Strengthen Security Partnership

Washington Meeting Reaffirms Commitment

On December 10, 2025, U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth welcomed Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles and U.K. Defence Secretary John Healey to the Pentagon. The three leaders met to reaffirm their shared commitment to the AUKUS security partnership and to outline the next steps for deeper cooperation.

Progress on Submarine Industrial Base

During the meeting, the ministers reviewed ongoing efforts to expand infrastructure and strengthen the skilled workforce needed to support the trilateral submarine program. They emphasized that all three nations remain determined to move “full steam ahead” as they build a stronger and more capable submarine industrial base.

Focus on Delivery and Long-Term Success

The leaders also explored new ways to speed up AUKUS implementation. They agreed to increase focus, coordination, and execution to ensure the partnership meets long-term security goals. Their discussions highlighted the need for efficiency and shared responsibility as the program grows.

Strengthening AUKUS Pillar I and Pillar II

The ministers stressed the vital role of submarine cooperation under AUKUS Pillar I, describing it as essential for maintaining a strong deterrent in the Indo-Pacific region. They also discussed AUKUS Pillar II, which covers advanced military technologies. All three leaders agreed to look for opportunities to accelerate the development of these capabilities, especially those linked to near-term warfighting needs.
