By National Security Desk | July 22, 2025
A Bangladesh Air Force F-7 BGI jet crashed into a university campus, killing 19 people, including students and faculty. The aircraft took off from Kurmitola Air Base at 1:06 PM and lost control shortly after takeoff.
According to eyewitnesses, the fighter jet plunged into a classroom building, causing a massive explosion and fire. Several victims died on the spot, while others succumbed to injuries en route to the hospital.
“We heard a deafening noise, then everything was on fire,” said a student who witnessed the crash from a nearby building.
The pilot attempted to eject from the aircraft, but it remains unclear whether the attempt was successful. Emergency crews, firefighters, and military responders arrived within minutes, working through heavy smoke and debris to rescue survivors.
Furthermore, dozens of others sustained critical injuries and are undergoing treatment in local hospitals. Several remain in intensive care, and the death toll may rise.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, though initial reports suggest a technical malfunction may be responsible. A formal inquiry has been ordered by the Bangladesh Ministry of Defense.
“This is a devastating loss,” said an air force spokesperson. “We are working to understand what went wrong and prevent future incidents.”
In addition, campus operations have been suspended, and grief-stricken families gathered outside hospitals and the crash site, seeking updates on loved ones.
Finally, the nation mourns one of its deadliest military aviation disasters, as flags fly at half-mast and a national day of mourning is declared.
