BBC Seeks to Dismiss Trump $5 Billion Lawsuit
BBC Challenges Trump Legal Claim
The BBC will ask a Florida court to dismiss former US President Donald Trump’s $5 billion lawsuit. The case concerns how his 6 January 2021 speech was edited in a Panorama documentary.
Trump filed the lawsuit last month, claiming the broadcaster defamed him and broke trade laws.
Legal Arguments from the BBC
Court documents filed on Monday show that the BBC plans to argue three main points. First, the Florida court does not have “personal jurisdiction” over the broadcaster. Second, the court venue is “improper.” Third, Trump has “failed to state a claim,” meaning his legal argument lacks a solid foundation.
Previous BBC Apology
The BBC has already apologized for the way the speech was edited. However, it refused Trump’s request for compensation and disagreed that his defamation claim has any legal basis.
