Dhaka — A Bangladeshi court on Monday heard corruption cases filed against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her family members, including her daughter, a senior United Nations official.
Three representatives from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) presented testimonies in separate cases linked to an alleged illegal acquisition of valuable land in a suburb of Dhaka.
Hasina, 77, left Bangladesh by helicopter on August 5, 2024, following weeks of student-led demonstrations opposing her rule, which critics have described as increasingly authoritarian.
She has so far ignored court orders to return from India, where she is currently residing, to face a separate trial on charges of crimes against humanity over a deadly crackdown on the protests.
The former premier is facing six corruption cases alongside her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, who lives in the United States, and her daughter, Saima Wazed, who serves as the World Health Organization’s Southeast Asia regional director in New Delhi.
