Chicago, IL — Former U.S. President Joe Biden launched a sharp critique of the Trump administration’s restructuring of the Social Security Administration (SSA), warning of severe consequences for millions of Americans who rely on federal benefits.
Speaking at the national conference of Advocates, Counselors, and Representatives for the Disabled (ACRD), Biden condemned the sweeping changes spearheaded by the Department of Government Efficiency, now reportedly influenced by tech billionaire Elon Musk. The overhaul has resulted in the termination of over 7,000 SSA employees and significant disruptions in service.
“In less than 100 days, they’ve done massive damage — it’s truly staggering,” Biden said, likening the approach to the tech industry’s infamous “move fast and break things” philosophy. Though he refrained from naming Trump, his criticism pointed squarely at the Republican administration’s governance style.
Biden also took aim at deep staffing cuts and a dramatic downsizing of the agency’s tech division, which he says have led to widespread website outages and delays in benefit disbursement. “They’re not fixing the system — they’re breaking it,” he added. “It’s shoot first, aim later.”
He went further, accusing Republicans of deliberately weakening Social Security to justify diverting funds toward tax reductions, alluding to the controversial 2017 tax legislation. “They want to wreck it just so they can rob it,” Biden said.
The former president expressed concern over rising national division, highlighting what he described as “30 percent of the population with no heart.”
While the SSA has denied Biden’s accusations, asserting that President Trump is committed to preserving the program and enhancing services, Biden’s comments have energized Democrats. Nationwide protests are now being organized in defense of federal entitlements.
Biden’s speech served as both a strong defense of Social Security — a lifeline for over 73 million Americans — and a rallying cry against proposed Republican reforms.
