Canada Misses Olympic Berth After Mexico Defeat
Canada’s hopes of qualifying for the 2028 Olympic men’s soccer tournament ended Friday after a 2-1 semifinal defeat to Mexico at the CONCACAF U-20 Championship.
The Canadians made a strong start when Owen Graham-Roache opened the scoring just six minutes into the match. However, Mexico gradually turned the game around in the second half.
Cristobal Alfaro brought Mexico level in the 49th minute before midfielder Hugo Camberos completed the comeback by converting a penalty in the 78th minute.
The victory sent Mexico through to Sunday’s final against the United States and secured its place at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Despite missing out on Olympic qualification, Canada’s campaign produced an important consolation. Its run to the semifinals secured a place at the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which will be hosted by Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
Canada entered the knockout stage after finishing first in Group C. The team opened the tournament with a 3-0 victory over Panama before drawing 1-1 with Honduras and 2-2 with Jamaica. Canada then defeated Jamaica 3-1 in the quarterfinals to reach the last four.
The World Cup qualification marks Canada’s return to the FIFA U-20 tournament for the first time since 2007, when the country hosted the competition.
While the Olympic dream ended in Mexico, Canada’s successful U-20 campaign has secured another major international opportunity for the country’s emerging generation of players.
