US Embassy Resumes Partial Operations in Michoacan
The US government will partially resume its activities in parts of Mexico’s Michoacan state, the US Embassy in Mexico announced Friday, following a temporary suspension triggered by security concerns.
According to a security alert issued by the embassy, US government operations will resume Saturday in Tancitaro, Tacambaro and Uruapan, as well as in the area between Morelia and Patzcuaro.
The embassy said the resumption would take place with the cooperation and assistance of Mexican authorities. However, it stressed that Michoacan remains under a US Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory, the highest warning issued by the US government.
The embassy urged Americans and others in the affected areas to remain alert, follow developments through local media and maintain communication with family members and friends regarding their location and safety.
Washington suspended government operations in Michoacan on Wednesday, citing a threat to US interests. The decision also temporarily halted inspections of avocados produced in the state for export to the US.
Mexico responded by deploying an additional 1,500 troops to Michoacan on Thursday as authorities sought to strengthen security in key agricultural areas.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said her administration was increasing security measures around avocado-producing regions to facilitate the rapid resumption of exports and prevent significant disruptions to Mexico’s economy and US supplies.
Michoacan plays a crucial role in the US avocado market. Mexico supplies more than 80% of avocados consumed in the United States, while avocado exports generated approximately $3.7 billion in revenue for Mexico in 2025.
The partial restoration of US activities comes as Mexican and American authorities continue efforts to address security concerns while protecting the supply chain between the two countries.
