BEIJING – China has called on the United States to fully eliminate reciprocal tariffs, urging Washington to correct its course and embrace mutual respect in trade relations. The demand follows the US decision to exempt certain consumer electronics and semiconductor equipment from its latest round of global levies.
In a statement issued on Sunday, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce criticized the continued imposition of tariffs, labeling them a “wrong practice,” and pressed the US to take more substantial action. “We urge the US to completely cancel the reciprocal tariffs and return to the right path of mutual respect,” the ministry stated.
Tensions between the world’s two largest economies have reignited since US President Donald Trump imposed sweeping tariffs, raising duties on Chinese goods to a staggering 145%, sparking sharp reactions from global markets.
In retaliation, China implemented 125% import tariffs on US products, effective Saturday, signaling its firm stance against what it sees as unjust trade measures.
While Washington has slightly eased its position, announcing a 90-day delay in tariff enforcement for most countries—China was notably excluded from the temporary relief.
Further softening came on Friday when the US Customs and Border Protection office excluded smartphones, laptops, memory chips, and other tech goods from the global tariff list. Beijing, however, dismissed the move as a “small step” and confirmed it is currently assessing the impact of the US decision.
This latest development highlights the ongoing volatility in US-China trade relations, with both sides maintaining firm positions amid mounting global economic concerns.
