Dr. Bernice King Receives Key to the City of Gary and Indiana Senate Honor

Mayor Eddie Melton and Senator Mark Spencer Celebrate King Family Legacy in Civil Rights and Nonviolence

Gary, Indiana – May 2, 2025 – In a heartfelt ceremony at Gary City Hall, Mayor Eddie Melton awarded the Key to the City of Gary to Dr. Bernice A. King, daughter of civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and CEO of The King Center for Nonviolent Social Change. The honor recognized her enduring commitment to nonviolent activism, social justice, and civic engagement.

Dr. King’s visit to Gary carries deep historical significance. Her father visited the city three times between 1959 and 1966, delivering speeches at key locations including St. John Baptist Church and the City-Wide Freedom Rally. During his first visit in 1959, Dr. King Sr. also received a Key to the City from then-Mayor Chacharis. Mayor Melton reflected on this legacy, emphasizing Gary’s long-standing connection with the King family.

“It is a profound privilege to present Dr. Bernice King with this honor,” Mayor Melton said. “She not only continues her father’s legacy but also inspires new generations through her leadership and advocacy for nonviolent social change.”

During her speech, Dr. King spoke passionately about the Kingian philosophy of nonviolence, its transformational impact on individuals, and the need for “heart work” in addition to activism. She emphasized that nonviolence is not merely a tool for change—it is a personal journey.

“People often ask me what my legacy is, but I inherited one that demands stewardship,” she stated. “Nonviolence starts within. If you believe it doesn’t work, it’s because you haven’t allowed it to work on you.”

Joining the ceremony was Indiana State Senator Mark Spencer, who presented Dr. King with a formal state resolution, honoring her contributions to civil rights, global peace efforts, and the preservation of her family’s legacy.

“Dr. Bernice King exemplifies the values her parents lived for—justice, equity, and peace,” said Senator Spencer. “Her advocacy has made a global impact, and it is my honor to recognize her today.”

The event marked a powerful reaffirmation of Gary’s place in the civil rights movement, and a celebration of Dr. Bernice King’s tireless efforts to uphold and advance her father’s vision of a just, united, and nonviolent world.
