At least eight civilians were killed and dozens more injured in a drone attack in Sudan’s North Kordofan state, according to the independent rights group Emergency Lawyers.
The group said the strike took place Thursday in the Um Sharu area of Sodari locality, targeting civilians who were traveling through the region. The attack also destroyed four civilian vehicles.
According to Emergency Lawyers, the drone returned and struck again while people were trying to evacuate those wounded in the initial attack. The group said there were no military forces or active clashes in the area when the incident occurred.
The rights organization strongly condemned the attack, warning that it would increase the suffering of civilians and make it more difficult for injured people to receive medical treatment. It described the incident as a possible violation of international humanitarian law and a potential war crime.
The group did not determine who carried out the drone strike. Neither the Sudanese army nor the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) had immediately commented on the incident.
The three Kordofan states have experienced repeated fighting between the army and RSF. Sudan has been engulfed in a devastating conflict between the two sides since April 2023, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of around 13 million people, according to UN and international estimates.
