Norway’s King Harald V died peacefully on Friday at the age of 89, prompting messages of sympathy from royal families across Europe.
The Royal Palace announced that the king passed away at the National Hospital in Oslo at 6:35 a.m. local time. He had served as Norway’s monarch for 35 years and was widely recognized for his dedication to his country.
Britain’s King Charles expressed deep sorrow over the death of his cousin, praising Harald for guiding Norway through significant changes with warmth, humility and commitment.
Spain’s King Felipe VI described Harald as a model of responsibility, dignity and simplicity, while highlighting his lifelong service to the Norwegian people.
Belgian King Philippe also expressed sadness, describing Harald as Europe’s longest-serving reigning monarch and a king who maintained a close relationship with his people.
Denmark’s King Frederik X sent condolences to Crown Prince Haakon, who is set to succeed his father as King Haakon VIII. Frederik recalled Harald’s close relationship with his family and described him as someone who made people feel comfortable in his presence.
The Dutch royal family said it would always remember its special friendship with Harald. Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf also expressed deep sadness, praising Harald’s remarkable life and his contributions both as head of state and an accomplished athlete.
The Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Guillaume V, also conveyed his condolences following the Norwegian monarch’s death.
