At 9:05 a.m. Friday, Matt Eberflus addressed reporters via Zoom, remaining the Chicago Bears’ coach despite mounting criticism following their 23-20 Thanksgiving loss to the Detroit Lions. The Bears’ failure to manage the clock in the final seconds, including not using a timeout, has fueled calls for Eberflus’ job.
Eberflus explained that his postgame routine remained unchanged, meeting with President Kevin Warren and GM Ryan Poles to review the game. He expressed confidence in his ability to prepare for the Dec. 8 game against the San Francisco 49ers, noting that midseason coach firings are uncommon for the Bears.
Regarding the last play against the Lions, Eberflus took full responsibility for the mishap, which saw rookie QB Caleb Williams attempt a deep pass instead of setting up a shorter field goal. Despite this, he emphasized that the decision-making process was normal, with accountability lying first with him, then the entire team.
