Karachi Lyari Building Collapse Leaves 11 Dead, Several Injured
A five-storey residential building, previously declared dangerous, collapsed on Friday morning in the densely populated Baghdadi area of Lyari, Karachi, resulting in at least 11 deaths and multiple injuries. The incident occurred near Lea Market around 10:53 am, according to Rescue 1122 officials. Families of those trapped under the rubble were seen in heart-wrenching scenes, crying for their loved ones as rescue efforts unfolded.
Rescue teams, including more than 100 personnel equipped with disaster response vehicles, cranes, snorkels, and ambulances, rushed to the scene following distress calls. Chhipa and Edhi volunteers also assisted in shifting victims to Civil Hospital Karachi. Rescue operations faced significant challenges due to narrow streets, large crowds of onlookers, and mobile network disruptions that hampered coordination.
Police and Rangers quickly cordoned off the area to facilitate emergency operations. Authorities confirmed that several women were among the deceased. Despite repeated warnings to evacuate the unsafe building, many residents refused to leave, leading to the tragedy. Investigations are underway to determine responsibility for the collapse and to prevent future incidents in Karachi’s high-risk buildings.
